Lady Gaga's Born This Way Ball Kicks Off Amid Protests

Seoul, South Korea, set list heavy on new material, but Gaga's biggest hits come out to play.

<P><a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/lady_gaga/artist.jhtml">Lady Gaga</a> kicked off her hotly awaited <i>Born This Way</i> Ball at Seoul, South Korea's Olympic Stadium on Friday (April 27) in front of 45,000 fans, and despite <a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-17867102" target="_blank">protests</a> from Christian groups saying Mother Monster was "obscene" and could "taint" young people with her performance, the concert appears to have gone on without incident. </P><P> </P><P>Intrepid Twitter fans are already showing off pictures and video of the <i>BTW</i> Ball's enormous Gothic castle backdrop and myriad costume changes, making it clear that Gaga has outdone even her own Monster Ball in terms of spectacle. </P><P> </P><P>While we wait for reviews to trickle in from halfway around the world, one thing is certain: No minors were corrupted at the show. Earlier this month, the Korea Media Rating Board decided to <a href="http://newsroom.mtv.com/2012/04/02/lady-gaga-unfazed-by-south-korean-concert-age-restrictions/">elevate the age rating</a> for the concert from 12 to 18, prohibiting minors from seeing the concert. When the board notified Gaga's tour promotion company and a sponsor of the change in age restrictions, it did not offer a reason why the show &#8212; which at the time was still in rehearsals and has not been reviewed publicly &#8212; was considered unsuitable for children under 18. </P><P> </P><P><CENTER><embed src="http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:uma:video:mtv.com:717952/cp~vid%3D717952%26uri%3Dmgid%3Auma%3Avideo%3Amtv.com%3A717952" width="430" height="242" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowFullScreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" base="."></embed></CENTER> </P><P> </P><P>The likely catalyst for the board's decision came more into focus as the concert neared and protests from a group of conservative Christians calling itself the Alliance for Sound Culture in Sexuality ramped up. The group <a href="http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-31749_162-57419977-10391698/lady-gagas-born-this-way-ball-met-by-protests-in-south-korea/" target="_blank">covered Seoul with posters</a> accusing Gaga of "spreading unhealthy sexual culture" through "lewd lyrics and performances." </P><P> </P><P>The superstar and her fans, however, were undeterred. Though she <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/ladygaga/status/186886867118080000" target="_blank">tweeted</a> her hopes that the Korea Media Rating Board would reverse its decision (it didn't), she continued on as planned. Many fans reportedly arrived at the show wearing versions of Gaga's most well-known flamboyant costumes, and there have been no reports of disturbances at the concert. </P><P> </P><P>Before the show, Gaga <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/ladygaga/status/195815732494348288" target="_blank">tweeted</a>, "I can you hear you Korea. ComScore: Amazon?s Kindle Fire Now Has Over Half The U.S. Android Tablet Market (And All The Mindshare?)

On the same day that Amazon will be releasing its quarterly earnings, some research from comScore underscores just how far the company has come since launching its Kindle Fire tablet in November 2011. The researchers say that as of February 2012, Amazon's Kindle Fire now accounts for 54.4 percent of all Android tablets in the U.S. Given how many different models of Android tablets there are out in the market at the moment, that gives it a strong lead over the rest of the field: the whole range of Samsung Galaxy Tab tablets, added together, only accounted for 15.4 percent of the market, with the Xoom following at seven percent, comScore said.

Saints GM Mickey Loomis reportedly could listen to opposing teams ...

As if the Saints weren?t already in enough trouble for running a bounty program under former defensive coordinator Gregg Williams, their GM is now facing charges of spying on opposing teams? radio communications.

?Outside the Lines? reported that the U.S. Attorney?s Office in the Eastern District of Louisiana was told last week that Saints GM Mickey Loomis had the opposing coaches? communications lines re-wired so that he could listen to them from his suite on game days.

The illegal tapping apparently went on from 2002-2004, a span where the Saints went 25-23 under head coach Jim Haslett. The report states that the previous GM had the ability to listen to communications of the Saints? coaches on game days, but when Loomis took over, he had the device re-wired so that he could listen to opposing coaches.

ESPN does not know if Loomis used the device during games (though come on, who would get that installed and then not use it?). The team?s defensive coordinator at the time, Rick Venturi, says he never received help during games. Rick Mueller, the brother of former team GM Randy Mueller, says he sat in the GM?s suite during Loomis? tenure and recalls Loomis using an earpiece during games, which would indicate he was listening to opposing coaches.

Loomis? ability to listen to opposing coaches apparently went away after Hurricane Katrina, meaning it ended after the 2004 season. The statue of limitations for federal and state laws, which these accusations would violate, have passed if 2004 was the last time Loomis listened. However, opposing teams that were harmed would have two years to file a suit.

As disturbing as these accusations are, it?s not the first time we?ve heard of teams using electronic means to gain an advantage. The Broncos were investigated in 2010 for taping the 49ers? practice in London. The Patriots infamously taped opposing teams? signals during games and also were accused of interfering with the radio communication of opposing teams.

Loomis was already suspended eight games for the Saints? bounty program, and the latest allegations do nothing to help his reputation or any pleas of innocence me may have made. This is one dirty organization, and it began at the top.

The Saints, unsurprisingly, are denying the charges.

?This report is 1000 percent false,? Greg Bensel, vice president of communications for the Saints. ?Completely inaccurate. We asked ESPN to provide us evidence to support their allegations and they refused. The team and Mickey are seeking all legal recourse regarding these false allegations.?

Dark matter search turns up empty

New calculations suggest dearth of invisible substance in solar neighborhood

Scientists using Earth-based experiments to detect particles of dark matter might now know why they keep coming up empty-handed: There may be no dark matter in the solar neighborhood ? at least, not within 13,000 light-years, reports a study appearing in an upcoming issue of the Astrophysical Journal.

Though dark matter, a mysterious substance different from ordinary, visible matter, supposedly makes up more than 80 percent of the matter in the universe, the new work suggests that the solar system lives in a dark matter desert. That?s a problem, because most scientists think the the Milky Way galaxy is embedded in a large halo of dark matter.

If the results hold, scientists will have to reconsider what sort of shape that dark matter halo takes, although it?s unlikely to cause any major cosmological upheavals.

?This doesn?t mean that dark matter does not exist,? says study coauthor Christian Moni Bidin, an astronomer at the Universidad de Concepcion in Chile. ?The result is only that dark matter is not where we expected it.?

Dark matter explains many things, including the rotation speed of the Milky Way. Its outer reaches spin more rapidly than expected based on the amount of mass sequestered in visible stars. Scientists have deduced that unseen matter, probably in the form of exotic subatomic particles, engulfs the speeding galaxy, exerting a gravitational force that accounts for the rapid rotation.

Since dark matter is invisible, scientists can?t directly observe it in space. Instead, they infer its presence by looking for its gravitational effect on things like stars, gas, and light from distant galaxies. For the new work, a team in Chile went hunting for changes in the paths of stars crossing the sky, sinuous indicators that masses of the dark stuff lay nearby.

More than a year ago, astronomers studied the motion of roughly 400 red giant stars that hovered far above the galactic plane in the vicinity of the solar system. Now, the team in Chile has calculated the amount of matter needed to explain the stars? movements. That total equals the mass of stuff they can see.?

Ergo, no dark matter.

It?s a challenging measurement, and one that may not have been done right, says Chris Flynn, an astronomer at Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne, Australia. When Flynn applied the team?s method to a simulated galaxy with known quantities of dark matter and stars, it failed to detect the simulated dark matter. ?My best bet is that something has gone astray in the measurements or analysis,? says Flynn, a referee of the paper. ?I was able to show to my own satisfaction that there was a problem of some kind in the method, but couldn't diagnose where the problem really is.?

Moni Bidin says future observations of millions of stars should help sort out what?s going on. Right now, he?s hesitant to infer too much from the results, suggesting mainly that scientists trying to capture dark matter particles on Earth might be fighting a losing battle. If the results hold, there are broader consequences for the distribution of dark matter around the Milky Way.

Instead of being spherical, the dark halo might be elongated and shaped more like a cigar, a squashed beach ball, or a rugby ball (kind of like a bloated American football). A cigar or rugby ball oriented perpendicularly to the galactic plane would fit the absence of dark matter near the sun. ?But models and theories have great trouble explaining the observation of this shape,? Moni Bidin says.

Astronomer Sukanya Chakrabarti notes that theories describing the distribution and evolution of dark matter on galactic scales are incomplete. Perhaps, she notes, reworking those theories will make it easier to generate something like a cigar-shaped halo, piercing the heart of the galaxy. ?We understand the skeletal structure of the universe quite well,? says Chakrabarti, of Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton. ?But if you zoom in to one galaxy, and try to understand the guts of galaxy evolution, there are many physics things we haven?t put in.?

Some scientists have already suggested that the Milky Way?s halo is not spherical and is instead more like a squished beach ball ? a shape consistent with the new results, says astrophysicist David Law at the University of Toronto in Canada. Law defined the halo?s shape by looking at how the Milky Way?s satellite galaxies behave. His measurements, published in 2010, suggested a squished sphere, with the distribution of dark matter dropping off in the solar neighborhood. That kind of shape is consistent with these results, Law argues. But he, too, notes that the new results should be approached with caution.

?I don?t think it?s quite time to say that there is no dark matter in the solar neighborhood at all,? Law says. ?That isn?t necessarily the most likely explanation.?

This not-particularly-subtle add-on apparently improves GPS performance noticeably and attaches to the base of the tablet, meaning that you won't be able to juggle both keyboard typing and location functions.
