It takes self-esteem and confidence to boldly move forward with new goals and plans. It is easy to talk about it and every New Year brings a sense of new possibilities and with it excitement.

In order to get a different result, however, we have to think, feel and act differently than what we have been thinking, feeling and acting. If you keep doing the same old thing, you will keep getting the same old results.

I find that most people are unaware of the powerful role of self-esteem in determining the quality of their lives. Your level of self-respect, your self-concept and self-confidence determines everything from the quality of your relationships, to your health and finances. And, unfortunately, most people are not even consciously aware of all of the negative self-talk and negative media messages that intrude upon their minds every single day. If someone talked about you the way you criticize yourself, you would probably be offended or would avoid his or her company.

Yet, we typically allow the verbal abuse of negative self-talk to go on and on without censorship. The only way to stop this vicious cycle that is a major contributor to sabotaging your life is to become consciously aware of your thoughts and to understand that your level of self-esteem and confidence is simply based upon what thoughts you choose to believe about yourself. And it really is ultimately a choice.

This morning I came across an old book of mine written by an eminent psychologist who is known for his books on self-esteem. His name is Nathaniel Branden and these quotes are taken from his book ?How To Raise Your Self-Esteem?. Here are a couple of quotes from Dr. Branden; he says, ?Thus self-esteem is the key to success or failure. It is also the key to understanding ourselves and others.? ??I cannot think of a single psychological difficulty?that is not traceable to poor self-esteem. Positive self-esteem is a cardinal requirement of a fulfilling life?.

We all hope for world peace, yet as a whole, we do not understand how the peace we are seeking has to start within, within each one of us. You cannot love your neighbor until you love yourself. If you cannot get along with your own family members, why are we expecting nations to understand and get along together? Nations are composed of individual people, of course.

This new revolution or rather evolution that we see going on in the world, in order to significantly improve our quality of life has to begin from the inside out. As Dr Brandon also said ?One of the most significant characteristics of healthy self-esteem is that it is the state of one who is not at war either with himself or with others?.

Healing our self-perception will not only build our self-confidence, it can literally heal the world. This is one reason why I am so passionate about this topic. A Happy New Year begins with setting goals to obtain a better understanding of who you really are, and thus creating a happy new YOU!

Oklahoma is No. 1 in AP poll for 100th time (AP)

NEW YORK ? For the 100th time, Oklahoma is No. 1. The Sooners reached a milestone in the history of The Associated Press college football poll without even playing. Oklahoma became the first team to hold the top ranking 100 times since the poll began 1936.

The Sooners will bring that No. 1 ranking into one of the biggest nonconference games of the season when they face No. 5 Florida State in Tallahassee on Saturday.

Oklahoma received 32 first-place votes and 1,441 points from the media panel.

Alabama reclaimed the No. 2 spot after a 27-11 victory at Penn State, flip-flopping with No. 3 LSU. Last week, the Tigers jumped the Crimson Tide. Boise State is No. 4.

Alabama received nine-first-place votes, LSU had 17 and Boise State had two.

The Sooners have been ranked No. 1 in all three polls this season, including their 10th appearance as No. 1 in the preseason, another record.

Notre Dame is second to OU with 95 overall appearances as the No. 1 team in the AP poll. Ohio State is next at 94 and Southern California has been No. 1 90 times.

Defending national champion Auburn moved back into the rankings at No. 21 after one of the wildest wins from one of the wildest days in college football in recent memory.

The Tigers needed a last-second goal line stand to beat Mississippi State 41-34, a week after scoring two touchdowns in the final two minutes to defeat Utah State. Auburn has the nation's longest winning streak at 17 games.

Also moving into the rankings this week was No. 22 Arizona State, which beat Missouri 37-30 in overtime on Friday.

Missouri and Penn State fell out of the Top 25.

The rest of the top 10 had Stanford at No. 6, followed by Wisconsin, Oklahoma State, Texas A&M and Nebraska.

No. 11 South Carolina moved up a spot after beating Georgia 45-42 on the strength of three nonoffensive touchdowns.

Oregon was No. 12, with Virginia Tech at 13, Arkansas 14 and Michigan State 15.

No. 16 Florida, Ohio State, West Virginia, Baylor and South Florida round out the top 20.

Joining Auburn and Arizona State in the final five were No. 23 TCU, No. 24 Texas and No. 25 Mississippi State, which fell nine spots.

Smaller corn surplus could push food prices higher

NEW YORK (AP) ? Food prices could rise next year because an unseasonably hot summer likely damaged much of this year's corn crop.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture estimated Monday that a surplus of 672 million bushels of corn will be left over at the end of next summer. The estimated surplus is down from last month's forecast and well below levels that are considered healthy.

This spring, farmers planted the second-largest crop since World War II. But high temperatures stunted the plants.

"We just didn't have a good growing year," said Jason Ward, an analyst with Northstar Commodity in Minneapolis. "It was too hot, too warm, too dry at the wrong time."

The price of corn was relatively unchanged at $7.33 a bushel on Monday. While that's down from its peak of $7.99 reached in June, it's still nearly twice the price paid last summer.

A bushel of corn equals 25.4 kilograms, or 56 pounds.

More expensive corn drives food prices higher because corn is an ingredient in everything from animal feed to cereal to soft drinks. It takes about six months for corn prices to trickle down to products at the grocery store.

But many food producers are already being squeezed by the higher prices. Chicken producer Sanderson Farms Inc. reported its third straight quarterly loss late last month, in part, because of increased costs for feed. Smithfield Foods Inc., the world's largest hog producer, said last week that high feed costs would remain a problem this year.

"Ingredient prices are going to stay high for a while," Ward said.

Traders also worry that grain shortages could return next year because of the damaged crops.

Farmers are expected to have a surplus of 920 million bushels when the harvest begins this month, the USDA said. That's roughly a 26-day supply of corn, slightly less than the previous month's estimate.

But the USDA said the corn surplus could dwindle next fall to about a 19-day supply. A 30-day supply is considered healthy.

When crop reserves are low, market prices can jump quickly, said Scott Irwin, an agriculture economics professor at the University of Illinois. When reserves are at adequate levels, a decline in grain supplies tends to cause prices to rise modestly. But when reserves are unusually low relative to demand, short-term supply disruptions can cause prices to jump exponentially, Irwin said.

In part, that's because unlike with other goods, rising food prices generally don't cause people to buy less food. Rather, they typically cut spending on other things so they can keep the diets they're accustomed to. Prices tend to stay high until demand finally slackens.

A smaller surplus drove corn prices higher earlier this year. Global demand for corn, soybeans and wheat has outstripped production for the last 10 years. Surpluses, vital to a stable food supply, have shrunk.

Fire damages LA home once occupied by Nicholson (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? A blaze badly damaged a home in the Hollywood Hills that once was occupied by actor Jack Nicholson, injuring two firefighters.

Fire officials say the blaze broke out shortly before 8 p.m. Friday at a house perched on a slope in the Hollywood Hills. Matt Spence, a spokesman for the Los Angeles Fire Department, says nearly 90 firefighters were on scene with two being taken to a hospital for unknown injuries.

The fire was knocked down in about 1 1/2 hours. The cause of the blaze is under investigation.

According to the Nexis service, Nicholson had lived in the house at one time. Afterhours phone messages left for two of Nicholson's representatives were not immediately returned.

ECB to signal change in policy tack (Reuters)

FRANKFURT (Reuters) ? The European Central Bank is expected to signal a change in policy direction on Thursday, halting an interest-rate rise cycle just five months after it started as the euro zone debt crisis weighs on the economy.

The governing council will discuss, in the meeting now underway, new inflation and growth forecasts from the ECB's in-house economists. They are likely to be revised down from the last round in June, allowing the bank's policymakers to justify a halt to the tightening cycle they began without other leading central banks.

While inflation remained at 2.5 percent last month, well above the ECB target of just below 2 percent zone, such is the concern about faltering growth that financial markets are pricing in a cut to rates from 1.5 percent as early as December.

Economists, who tend to take a broader view than that shown in market pricing, see an outside chance the ECB could cut in the months ahead, though such a U-turn after hikes in April and July would embarrass ECB President Jean-Claude Trichet, who is unlikely to back a cut before his term ends next month.

"It's not out of the question but it's highly unlikely," said Berenberg bank economist Holger Schmieding. "It would probably take a major recession ... to change the ECB's mind on rates, and I don't think we are anywhere close to that."

A month after the ECB reactivated its controversial bond-buying program, markets will also be looking for signs of how the central bank plans to deploy the measure going forward, after using it to hold down government borrowing costs in Italy and Spain over the past month.

The ECB is concerned that by buying the sovereign bonds of Italy -- the euro zone's third largest economy -- it is only encouraging the Italian government to slacken efforts to shore up its finances, doing little to tackle to roots of the crisis.

By allowing market borrowing costs to rise, the ECB can raise pressure on Italy to implement austerity measures.

Italy responded to a renewed attack on its bonds by promising on Tuesday to hike value-added tax. The pledge came after yields crept up to around 5.5 percent, above the 5 percent level the ECB had appeared to be targeting.

Mario Draghi, who will succeed Trichet from November 1, warned euro zone governments earlier this week they should not assume the bond purchases would continue indefinitely.

"I think the ECB's view is that the program is temporary, but it makes no sense to be shouting about it, it makes sense to be a bit opaque and just say the program is ongoing," said Nick Kounis, an economist at ABN Amro.

Societe Generale economist James Nixon said the rise in Italian bonds yields above 5 percent raised questions about the ECB's commitment to the program. He expected the central bank to keep the heat on Italy to implement budget-saving measures.

"There will be a fairly strong message from the ECB for the need for credible steps in austerity," Nixon said.

PRICE RISKS

Policymakers' failure to resolve the debt crisis has eroded confidence in the 17-country euro zone, slowing the economy.

The euro zone's dominant service sector was effectively stagnant last month after two years of growth and manufacturing activity, which drove a large part of the economic recovery in the bloc, shrank for the first time since September 2009.

Some private sector economists put the chance of a return to recession at least 50 percent. Against this backdrop, the vast majority of forecasters polled by Reuters expected the ECB to revise down its 2011 and 2012 GDP projections from the respective 1.5-2.3 and 0.6-2.8 percent announced in June.

Economists were fairly evenly split as to whether the central bank would revise down or leave unchanged its 2011 and 2012 inflation forecasts. Only three of 46 saw an upward revision.

They will pay close attention to the language Trichet uses at his 1230 GMT news conference to assess inflation risks. Last month, he said there were "upside risks to price stability."

"I imagine they will no longer say that inflation risks are on the upside. My own view is that they have moved to the downside, but I don't think the ECB will move that quickly. The first step they will make is to say that they are balanced," said ABN Amro's Kounis.

"It's interesting whether they go for downside risks to growth forecast, that would give a bit of a hint that they are willing to consider rate cuts in the future," he added.

Last month, Trichet said risks to the economic outlook for the euro area "remain broadly balanced."

The Olympians, or rather the 12 of Gods and Goddess? that didn?t already mingle into Earth with humans, wasted their days away doing nothing but getting drunk and angering one another, having all out brawls on Mount Olympus. Gaia only wishes the best for her gandchildren so, with a drop of forgetfulness in their Ambrosia, Gaia has plans for them. She is going to put them on Earth more specifically, twist things around so each of them can forget that they are gods for a while. Therefore, they won't have to remember how the people stopped worshiping them. They won't forget forever, but Gaia hopes it is long enough for them to decide to merge with the mortals instead of seclude themselves away from them.

With all the Gods and Goddesses in apparently human bodies, their powers dormant until they remember them, they are all placed in Los Vegas with a cascade of fake memories from a human life. Though by nature these immortals are drawn together, though that doesn't mean things will necessarily go as they should, or as they had once before. Who knows what'll happen if they start remembering who they are. Will they want to return to Olympus at all?

Zeus -

Goddess of Love, Beauty, and sexuality. Aphrodite can make people fall in and out of love, as well as make them seem more beautiful, without changing their appearance. Myrtles, doves, sparrows, horses, and swans are sacred to her.

Hermes -
Messenger to the Gods, but ruled over thieves, athletes, sports, travelers, and commerce. Hermes is the best thief and one of the best athletes, being able to bestow either gift on someone. His symbols include the lyre, tortoise, and rooster.

Hades -
King of the dead and the Underworld as well as riches, mainly gems and jewels. Not the personification of Death, he instead is the judge on a persons soul, whether they were corrupt of good. His symbols are Cerberus, cape of invisibility, Cypress, and Narcissus.

Persephone -
Queen of the Underworld, Persephone is also Goddess of Spring, seeds, fruits, and fields. She has sway over plants, and people through her plants, as she can make ambrosia. All of which are symbols of Persephone.

Hestia - WritingNitrate
Goddess of the Hearth, homemaking, and architecture she has an eye for things and can make rooms convey feelings towards people. Her symbols include the candle, torch, fire, Crane, pig, and donkey.

Hephaestus -
God of the Forge, Technology, Metals, and fire. Unlike most gods, Hephaestus was flawed, and therefore imperfect in the other Gods? eyes. He has power over all of these things and his symbols include, Hammer, Anvil, and Tongs.

So, this is obviously about the Greek Gods. I would just like to point something out that you won?t remember everything at once. Maybe little bits and snatches, but not on the first day maybe not even on the second. I don?t want everything to happen at once, though I don?t want it to happen to long after either. I?ve got a few surprises in store for you as well.

I also expect a certain amount of maturity, not the r-rated kind, from anyone who decides to join. I don?t want to see that the IC has a new reply and it be a simple paragraph. I personally write multiple paragraph posts and expect that from everyone else.

Also, your fake human memories should give you a reason as to why your human body, that the God or Goddess is in, are in Los Vegas.

Also, but not only did Greeks not see marriage as we do, marrying your sister was fine to them, none of the Gods will have any recollection of who they are. Aphrodite might find herself smitten with Zeus. We see that as incest now days, and it is quite nasty, but the Greeks, more specifically The Gods, didn't see it that way. Though, Apollo having the hots for Artemis would be kind of odd, they are twins.
