No, business writing doesn't need to stink - Fortune Management

By Megan Hustad, contributor

FORTUNE -- It's hard to say exactly when I first decided that everyone in business should study the art of copywriting, but it was probably upon being presented with yet another PowerPoint deck four times as long as it needed to be and wholly unpersuasive. The rhetorical power of these documents are typically so underwhelming that I began to wonder if anyone had plotted sales of Microsoft Office against the Dow Jones.

Browsing through The Copy Book: How Some of the Best Advertising Writers in the World Write Their Advertising convinced me. Released by art book publisher Taschen late last year, The Copy Book is an inadvertent how-to for crafting business communications. Lesson one: Keep it short.

This premium placed on brevity seems hypocritical when you first glance at the ads reproduced in the book. Many hark back to the age of long copy, when a full-page magazine ad might run to 400 words, or just over half the length of an average op-ed column. A great deal longer than a Tweet, in other words. But the copywriters' process for arriving at 400 words was so rigorous that one could argue it represented a higher valuation of the reader's time. (And by the time someone has Tweeted 18 times a day, well, there goes concision.)

MORE:?Must you give a job interviewer your Facebook password?

To a person, the copywriters quoted in the book stress that the process emerged because they lived in perpetual fear of losing their reader. Steve Hayden, creator of Apple's (AAPL) "1984" ad, remarked that the truth of an easily distracted, borderline hostile audience was drilled into him from his earliest days in the business: "Four percent of the readership will slog through 70% of body copy no matter how bad it is. Your job is to beat those odds."

They subjected the words to intense scrutiny and imagined an audience predisposed more toward contempt than admiration. Tony Brignull, former head of copywriting at Collett Dickenson Pearce, claims that if he had doubts about copy he was working on, he'd ask himself "would I walk up to a stranger at a drinks party and say these words to her? If she's interested, amused, engaged, I write on. If she starts looking over my shoulder or reaching for the peanuts I start again." Steve Harrison remarks in the book that a background in direct mail helped him understand the importance of hooking people from word one: "We set out to write headlines that elicited the response 'bloody hell, that's interesting, tell me more.'" (Lesson two: Be interesting.)

Surprisingly, many of these copywriters are remarkably unsentimental about language. "In a sense I am not interested in words," comments David Abbott. "Words, for me, are the servants of the argument and on the whole I like them to be plain, simple and familiar." Alfredo Marcantonio put his distrust of flourishes more succinctly: "Beware of adjectives," he warns. "They don't always do what you think."

The typical Microsoft Office document is less cluttered with adjectives than abstractions and Unnecessary Capitalizations placed there out of fear that the work won't be taken seriously without them. But the reliance on jargon and catchphrases ? move the needle is my current favorite ? betrays a different insecurity than that of the copywriter worried over losing his reader to a bowl of peanuts. The authors of overlong PowerPoint decks seem to worry most that they won't be considered smart, and so they have to keep typing, in increasingly puffed-up language.

MORE:?The good intentions that will kill your business

The ad man would say they should worry more about not being boring. There's some strategic insight in the excess length, however. If you extract the jargon and corporate-speak abstractions, what's left may not be all that impressive. If the basic idea is fatuous, its stupidity has nowhere to hide once phrased in plain language.

But if the point sounds unremarkable once put in plain English, maybe that's a signal to keep working and reworking. Not just the text, but also the idea -- because there's no separating the two.

How many times they go over a text is a theme the contributors to The Copy Book keep coming back to. Says David Abbott: "I might rework a headline 50 or 60 times to get the thought and balance exactly right." They took a chopping block to any portion of the work that wasn't accomplishing much.

So why is a similar process not in place in most workplaces? Some blame the disappearance of secretaries and the revision process they enabled along with it. "Used to be that you'd dictate a letter to your secretary and she'd type it up and show you a copy, and you'd look it over and mark it with changes," one longtime litigation attorney I spoke to said. "Maybe in that interim you reconsidered some things you thought you wanted to say but on further reflection didn't. Now everyone just fires off an email."

MORE:?On retirement, too many of us are fools

Others blame the increasing amounts of time spent reporting on what we've been doing all day at the expense of actually doing it.

So it's refreshing, in this era of swollen documents, to come across such strong endorsements of saying less. "When you get your copy to the point where you're really, really happy with it," Jim Durfee advised, "cut it by a third." Tony Cox edits his copy down "until I end up with the nub of the thing." Adrian Holmes suggested looking at a page as a visual object and asking if any paragraphs looked excessively heavy, in which case, words got deleted.

Which points to a paradox at the heart of copywriting: A copywriter knows how limited the chances are of anyone reading his or her work, let alone read it all the way to the end. But the fact that the work was likely to be disrespected only spurred them to improve it.

Today, a great deal of media attention is paid to people whose indiscreet post or impolitic YouTube video makes life difficult for them. It's news because it's the exception. The majority of content produced today is ignored. There's too much of it and not enough time. We're left with an argument for more process, fewer pages. Concludes The Copy Book's John Bevins: "Copywriting has taught me that [our work] enriches or impoverishes not just us, but society itself." When we borrow someone's attention, "we should strive to give something more valuable back."

Southern Bourbon Mountains: Ford's 1st Birthday Party! (What DID ...

Family post party

This post is a Two Part Series. Why? Because Friday night and Saturday morning of the party were filled with Urgent Care visits and lots of medication. This first part will tell you what did happen. Part two will cover what didn't happen (on my OCD list)
The bottom line (before you think I'm an over-the-top-mom) is that I love entertaining. While I'm not the chef in the family, I love getting the house ready, making a party playlist, setting up a slideshow, picking out invites, arranging flowers....etc. I made a promise to M that I will not do this for every birthday...I mean, won't we be at Monkey Joe's in a few years anyways? But a good old fashioned house party is my absolute favorite. We work hard on our homes and yards so why not celebrate that hard work with having friends over?

I picked a Cowboy theme for Ford's 1st birthday because it was cute, had plenty of decor ideas, and the invites I found on Etsy were so freaking adorable. Plus we could serve BBQ and beer and it would be a fun party!

So here we go!

LOVE these invites. Mine was a little different saying Bandanas & BBQ for Ford's 1st Birthday

A dear friend told me about this amazing cake lady here in Charlotte. Her phone number will cost you $20...just kidding. You will have to bribe me for it with more than that!

How cute are my sauce labels? NOT. I wanted to have a little NC map with a heart over Western NC for Tomato sauce and a heart over Easter NC for Vinegar sauce. That didn't happen and the sauces never made it into the bottles! But Dad did bring sauce from 12 Bones in Asheville and it was killer.

Dad toasting my hard work with a bloody mary.?

Here are the kiddos gift bags. I found the bags at the Dollar Store. I can't say enough about the Dollar Store! Having a party that includes a primary color as part of the decor helps too. Inside was a rubber ducky dressed as a cowboy and some silly sunglasses. Probably my craftiest endeavor was the labels. I wanted to order them off Etsy but instead I bought a stamp from Paper Source and downloaded a font. Impressed right? Using my old Rockbrook skills!

The spread. BBQ, Coleslaw (Bojangles!) Chips, Goldfish and Buddy Fruit squeeze snacks

Dr. Seuss's Happy Birthday Book for guests to sign and cookies as the take home!

How cute is Ford's smash cake?!

Our buddy Wallace looking mighty guilty! Beer & Juice boxes in the Radio Flyer!

Not so much a smash cake as a timidly poke cake. He loved it!

My sweet one year old

And there's me! Dollar store cups, napkins and straws from Sur la Table. How cute are Ford's friends?

I think the party went well! M's BBQ was perfection and I think all the kids had a good time!

A huge thank you to all my friends and family that came out for Ford's first birthday. A party is just a bunch of decorations until all your friends show up! You all are such wonderful friends and I feel like the luckiest mom in the world that Ford is surrounded by such amazing friends and family!!!

IPO market heats up, more startups going public

(AP) ? The IPO market is heating up. A growing economy and rising stock market are prompting more startups to go public, and investors appear hungry to invest.

This week, organic mac n' cheese maker Annie's and mobile ad firm Millennial Media posted the biggest first-day gains since networking site LinkedIn debuted last May. And Facebook's highly anticipated initial public stock offering is just weeks away.

After lying largely dormant for three years, the IPO market is churning again. And it's poised to get further lift. Congress is loosening restrictions in an attempt to make it easier for young companies to raise money. Still, high gas prices and stubborn unemployment rates continue to put a damper on growth, making it too early to tell whether an IPO recovery is here to stay.

The willingness of more startups to open their books and court wider investment suggests that they are optimistic about their business and the broader economy. And a strong IPO market could itself drive growth, as companies loaded with fresh cash injections hire workers to expand their operations.

Berkeley, Calif.-based Annie's Inc. saw shares soar 89 percent on Wednesday to close at $35.92. They rose another 5.6 percent on Thursday to finish at $37.92. The shares, originally expected to sell for $14 to $16, ended up pricing at $19 each. Baltimore-based Millennial Media Inc., which makes software that helps games makers and media companies decide what ads to push to smart phones and tablet computers, saw shares jump 92 percent from their $13 IPO price to close at $25. In total, 10 companies are expected to go public this week, the most since December 2010.

It marks an enthusiastic end to a strong quarter for IPOs. There have been more IPOs in the first three months of 2012 than there have been since the 2011 second quarter, said Richard Peterson, credit analyst at S&P Capital IQ. And on average, stocks hitting the market in the past three months have gained an average of 13 percent on their first trading day, according to the IPO advisory firm Renaissance Capital. That's the best performance since 2008.

The rush has come after the U.S. economy grew at an annual rate of 3 percent in the final three months of 2011, the best pace in a year and a half. Hiring is picking up. Earlier this month the Standard & Poor's 500 index closed at its highest point since May 2008. An improving stock market helps fuel demand for IPOs, which are considered riskier investments.

But the IPO market may yet peter out. There were signs of optimism at the start of 2011, but the European debt crisis and renewed economic weakness in the second half of the year froze the IPO market for months. And while more companies are going public now, they're pulling in less cash. U.S. IPOs have raised $5.5 billion so far this year, less than half of the $13 billion that newly public companies pulled in during the 2011 first quarter, according to Renaissance Capital.

It's also still too early to tell whether efforts by lawmakers to make it easier for small companies to raise money through IPOs will help rev up the market. President Obama is expected to soon sign a bill that would reduce the cost of going public for companies with less than $1 billion in annual revenue.

Splashy market debuts are drawing big headlines, but what matters for investors is what a company's stock does beyond the first day, said Kathleen Smith, principal at Renaissance Capital. Small investors may even lose money if they get swept up in first-day buying and end up paying much more than the price that big investors, such as hedge funds and mutual funds, got the night before.

"A more thoughtful investor might wait until the frenzy is over," Smith said.

LinkedIn Corp. shares, for example, more than doubled in their debut, closing up 109 percent at $94.25. But the hubbub didn't last and shares fell as low as $55.98 by November. The stock has recovered its losses, however, and closed Thursday at $102.67.

Though far from the dot-com bubble of the late 1990s, much of the investor demand in the past year has centered on technology stocks like LinkedIn, especially companies engaged in mobile devices and social networking.

Facebook's much-awaited IPO is expected later this spring. The Menlo Park, Calif.-based company has said it anticipates raising at least $5 billion. If all goes as expected, the world's biggest online social network could be valued at as much as $100 billion. That would be the biggest Internet IPO ever.

S&P's Peterson said the "Facebook factor" and gains in the broader stock market are both helping stoke investor demand for IPOs. It's also the end of the first quarter, so it's not uncommon for banks to want to get deals done before the period closes, he added.

Hiring of CEO revives Augusta membership debate

As a club that prides itself on tradition, Augusta National again is in the middle of a membership debate it thought it was done with nearly a decade ago.

Just seven days before the Masters, no less.

The last four chief executives of IBM ? a longtime corporate sponsor of the Masters ? have been members of the exclusive golf club in Augusta, Ga. The latest CEO of the computer giant happens to be a woman. Virginia Rometty was appointed this year.

One problem ? a woman has never worn a member's green jacket since Augusta National opened in 1933.

"I think they're both in a bind," Martha Burk said Thursday evening.

Burk, who spearheaded an unsuccessful campaign 10 years ago for the club to admit a female member, said Friday morning on CNN she fears Augusta and IBM will work out a "sham solution" to make the issue go away.

"The company has a huge responsibility here not to undermine its first female CEO," Burk said. "If they accept anything less than full member ? or resign their sponsorship, which is another option ? they're going to undermine their new CEO. And they'll be making a statement that they don't consider her an equal to her predecessors."

Still to be determined is how much traction the topic will muster going into the Masters.

Augusta National, through a spokesman, declined comment in keeping to its policy that membership issues are private. IBM did not immediately return a phone call seeking comment.

Rometty is said to play golf sparingly. Her greater passion is scuba diving.

Hootie Johnson, chairman of the club a decade ago, ignited the controversy back then when he said that while Augusta might one day have a female member, it would be on the club's timetable and "not at the point of a bayonet."

Burk applied pressure on just about everyone connected with the club and with the Masters, the major championship that garners the highest TV ratings. She demanded that four companies drop their television sponsorship because of discrimination. She lobbied PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem not to recognize the Masters as part of the tour schedule.

It didn't work. The protest fizzled in a parking lot down the street from the club during the third round of the 2003 tournament.

"We did raise the issue," Burk said on CNN. "If we had not done that, this would not be on the table now."

Not only is the debate back, this time it has a face ? Rometty, a 31-year veteran of IBM who has been ranked among the "50 Most Powerful Women in Business" by Fortune magazine the last seven years. Rometty was No. 7 last year.

The chairman of Augusta National ? and the Masters ? is Billy Payne, who ran the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta. When he replaced Johnson as chairman of the club and of the Masters tournament in 2006, he said there was "no specific timetable" for admitting women.

The question was raised at the 2007 and 2010 Masters. Both times, Payne said membership issues were private.

Rometty succeeds Sam Palmissano at IBM, which runs the Masters' website from the bottom floor of the media center. According to a list published by USA Today in 2002, the three CEOs prior to Palmissano also were members ? Louis Gertsner, John Akers and John Opel.

As the corporate sponsors became the target, Johnson wound up doing away with TV sponsorship for two years at the Masters to keep the corporate partners ? IBM, Coca-Cola and Citigroup ? out of the fray.

Only IBM returned as a TV sponsor for the 2005 Masters. The others were SBC Communications and ExxonMobil.

Burk said it should not be that easy for IBM to hide if the debate gains momentum.

"What IBM needs to do is draw a line in the sand ? 'We're either going to pull our sponsorship and membership and any ancillary activities we support with the tournament, or the club is going to have to honor our CEO the way they have in the past,'" Burk said in a telephone interview Thursday evening. "There's no papering over it. They just need to step up and do the right thing.

"They need to not pull that argument that they support the tournament and not the club," she said. "That does not fool anybody, and they could undermine their new CEO."

Burk said she would not be surprised if IBM pressured Rometty to say she doesn't want to be a member.

"Really, I don't think it's her responsibility," Burk said. "It's the board of directors. They need to take action here. They don't need to put that on her. They need to say, 'This is wrong. We thought the club was on the verge of making changes several years ago, and we regretfully end our sponsorship to maintain her credibility and the company brand.'"

The debate returns just in time for one of the most anticipated Masters in years. Tiger Woods finally returned to winning form last week at Bay Hill and is considered one of the favorites, along with U.S. Open champion Rory McIlroy. Eight of the top 20 players in the world ranking have won heading into the first major of the year, a list that includes world No. 1 Luke Donald and Phil Mickelson.

Now comes a sensitive issue that dogged the tournament a decade ago, and might not go away easily. Women can play the course at Augusta National, but cannot join the club or wear the Augusta green jacket, which is reserved for members and stands as a status symbol in business and golf.

Rometty could become a central figure in the argument over female membership whether she wishes to or not.

"We have a face, we have a resume, we have a title and we have a credible reason to do it that doesn't involve Martha Burk," Burk said.

Burk said she is no longer chair of the National Council of Women's Organizations. She had planned to step down until the first flap with the Masters began in the summer of 2002. Now, she said she runs the Corporate Accountability Project for the council, a project born from her battle with Augusta.

Yeah, basically how it sounds. Here is some background situation

I got married in august, and my wife told me prior to getting married she wanted to try a 3way with another woman, which i wanted.

Well I met this girl who kept flirting with me hardcore and i told the wife about it. she told me to ask her about a 3way, which i did but then the girl said no she didnt want that. So i just kinda laughed at her advances and would relay them to my wife.

My wife isnt a bitter or jealous woman and always thought the stories were funny, then recently she went out of her way to tell me i had a free pass with whoever i wanted, that i could sleep around as long as i was upfront. We've never had an open relationship.

At first I was kinda amazed by her and then I realized I would never want her to sleep around and the thought kills me, so how is she so ok with me sleeping around?

Any thoughts on why she is allowing/doesnt care if i do this?

I havent cheated FWIW or taken her up on the offer...

oh also i am 26 shes 25, neither married before and no kids

Don't ask us--ask your wife. If she is interested in "other" sexual relationships, she may find her sex life with you too understimulating and this is her way of getting you to expand your sexual repetoire. Or she's already having sex outside the marriage and wants you to do so, too, so she doesn't feel guilty. Both are possible explanations, but you need to talk it through with her, without being judgmental about her sexual proclivities. Yes, you have a right to feel misled and lied to if she knew that exclusive sex with one man would not be enough for you and married you without telling you. But her sexual interests are not inherently "wrong," just different.

Keep in mind that you could be in for a wild sexual ride if you find she does have these interests. But if you are unable to share her (like she is willing to share you), then the confines of marraige may not be something she can live with long term.

If she's just already cheating and offered the 3-way or your freedom just to cover & justify that, well, you have a very different problem.

First, what we suggest is not marriage and it's sad. I do know a true story of a similar situation. He went on a wild first date, with similiar crazy things and excitement. They got engaged. He apparently borrowed money, didn't repay it, they broke up and shed wanted the money back which he did not do. Big big mistake.

She sued him, tormented him through numerous courts, filed for a restraining order, beat the crap out of him for the next two years, he spent thousands on lawyers unsuccessfully trying to stave her off, was a nervous mess when I saw him, and his funeral was last year, having died of a hard attack at 37 years old. If he took advantage of her initially, he messed with the wrong person, and she make him pay. Moral, get a nice girl and do nice things. Forget about the things you are thinking. It cost my friend his life.

How to use the iPad Home button to navigate, access the fast app switcher, take a screenshot, and more

There's only one physical hardware button on the front of the new iPad so it's little wonder Apple has put it to work with several levels of functionality. While all the basic things are covered by the good old single click, there's a lot more, and a lot more advanced functionality hidden beneath that Home button using double and triple clicks and more.

Neutrons uncover new density waves in fermion liquids

Thursday, March 29, 2012

Scientists working at the Institut Laue-Langevin, one of the world's leading centres for neutron science, have carried out the first investigation of two-dimensional fermion liquids using neutron scattering, and discovered a new type of very short wave-length density wave. The team believe their discovery, published in Nature, will interest researchers looking at electronic systems, since high temperature superconductivity could result from this type of density fluctuations.

Fermi liquids are composed of strongly interacting fermion particles, a group that includes quarks, electrons, protons and neutrons. They are common in nature, found in atomic nuclei, metals, semiconductors, and neutron stars.

They are also one of two types of quantum liquid used to model and explain the complex interplay between atoms or even sub-atomic particles that is governed by quantum mechanics in a field known as 'many-body physics'.

Fermion particles are defined by their adherence to the Pauli Exclusion Principle that states that no two identical fermions can exist in the same energetic state, making fermion systems particularly complicated. As a result, whilst the other types of quantum liquid, composed of bosons like gluons and photons, are well understood in terms of their underlying physics, fermion liquids remain more mysterious.

As part of this on-going investigation a team of researchers from the Institut N?el (Centre national de la recherche scientifique and Universit? J. Fourier) in France and Aalto University in Finland (Microkelvin Collaboration), Oak Ridge National Laboratory and SUNY University at Buffalo in the US, Johannes Kepler University in Austria carried out the first direct investigation of these very short wave-length elementary excitations in a fermion liquid by inelastic neutron scattering. In their study, the neutrons were focused on a one atom thick layer of helium-3, a much rarer version of helium on Earth than helium-4 that is used in balloons and airships, which acts like a Fermi liquid at temperatures close to absolute zero.

Using this scattering technique the scientists were able to observe high frequency, very short wave-length density waves known as zero-sound oscillations. The results from the scattering experiments revealed the zero sound modes to be far longer lived in this two-dimensional fluid than those seen during previous experiments at the ILL in bulk liquids, where they were strongly damped.

The discovery of these oscillations in a fermion helium liquid is particularly interesting as it's thought that if this type of high frequency density oscillation is seen in another fermion liquid, composed of electrons, this could be a mechanism for high temperature superconductivity. Once the team have completed their investigation of the properties of the helium system, their next step is to extend this understanding to electron liquids.

Dr. Henri Godfrin, Director of research at CNRS, based at the Institut N?el, a leading laboratory for fundamental research in condensed matter physics:

"People working with electron systems will be very interested to see if this property exists in their own systems and this finding suggests it is entirely possible. This is an important discovery in the field of quantum fluids, which has direct consequences in other areas of many-body physics, particularly in understanding the makeup of metals and the physics behind neutron stars."

March 25th, 2012 ? Related ? Filed Under By cassandra_m

The first (I think!) Insurance Commissioner Candidate Forum will be held this Monday among the current officially filed Democratic candidates for the office:

Insurance Commissioner Candidate Forum
Monday March 26th, 2012
7:00 pm
Marbrook Elementary School
2101 Centerville Road
Wilmington, DE

Filed candidates (as of this writing) are: Mitch Crane, Paul Gallagher and Karen Weldin Stewart.

This is a great opportunity to see these candidates up close and personal, and (I imagine) a great opportunity to go and ask questions of those who want this job. I won?t be able to go, unfortunately, but hope that many of you attend and let us know your impressions.
