ROME ? Workers and equipment are moving into place to begin pumping out the half-million gallons of fuel from the toppled Costa Concordia before it spills into the pristine seas off Tuscany.
A crew believed to be from the Dutch shipwreck salvage firm Smit was seen on the bow of the Concordia Tuesday morning and a platform with heavy equipment was nearby. Italian rescue crews continued blasting small holes in the ship's steel frame so divers could more easily search for the 17 people still missing.
The Concordia ran aground and capsized off the Tuscan island of Giglio on Jan. 13 after the captain veered from his approved course and gashed the ship's hull on a reef, forcing the evacuation of 4,200 passengers and crew. So far 15 bodies have been found.
